Bana-Linga – Labrodorite

A Labradorite Bana Linga is generally a Shiva Linga carved from labradorite, the feldspar gemstone famous for its blue, green, gold, and sometimes violet flashes of light called labradorescence. Strictly speaking, it is different from a traditional natural Narmada Banalinga, which is naturally formed in the Narmada River. With a labradorite linga, the primary sacred significance comes from the Shiva Linga form; meanings attributed specifically to labradorite come mainly from modern gemstone traditions rather than classical Shaiva scripture.

Spiritual Significance: The Shiva Linga: Represents Shiva as the limitless, formless consciousness from which manifestation arises and into which it dissolves. It serves as a focus for moving from identification with the body and mind toward the witnessing consciousness. Labradorite: Its changing flashes symbolize how the ordinary can reveal extraordinary light when viewed from a different angle—representing the light of consciousness concealed behind the changing mind and external world.

Core Principles

  - Labradorite → Inner observation
  - Linga → Formless Divine
  - Mantra → Concentration of mind
  - Silence → Awareness beyond thought
  - Guru’s Grace → Surrender
  - Shiva → Pure consciousness

Daily Practice & Abhishekam

  - Daily Practice: After bathing, sit before the Linga with a peaceful mind. Light a lamp, offer water or a flower, and mentally surrender any disturbances.
  - Chanting: Chant Om Namaḥ Śivāya (ॐ नमः शिवाय) for 11, 27, 54, or 108 repetitions.
  - Offerings: Keep physical worship simple for a gemstone. Clean water is sufficient for a brief abhishekam, accompanied by flowers, bilva leaves, a lamp, and incense as per your tradition.

Dos and Don'ts

  - Dos: Keep the Linga in a dedicated, clean, and elevated place. Handle it with devotional intention and clean hands. Treat it as a sacred object rather than home decoration.
  - Don'ts: Avoid fear or ritual anxiety regarding directions, missed days, or incorrect touching. Do not confuse unusual sensations, visions, or emotional experiences with spiritual attainment. True progress is reflected in peace, compassion, humility, discernment, equanimity, and reduced ego.

Guru-Centered Alignment: Regard the Linga as an instrument to concentrate the mind rather than an independent source of supernatural power. Before worship, inwardly offer the practice at Amma’s Lotus Feet: "Amma, let this worship purify my mind. Let every mantra draw the mind inward. Let ego, attachment, and ignorance dissolve. Let this life become an instrument of Divine consciousness and Seva." Worship Shiva with the understanding that the Guru, Shiva, and the consciousness within are ultimately the same Supreme Reality.

Observances During the Menstrual Cycle

  - Physical Observances: Refrain from handling the Linga, performing abhishekam, changing altar objects, or conducting formal physical puja. Prioritize rest, hygiene, and inner intention, resuming physical worship after a head bath.
  - Internal Devotion: Maintain continuity through Manasika Puja (mental worship, chanting, listening to mantras, and meditation from a distance), Mental Japa (internal repetition of Om Namah Shivaya), and continuous inward prayer.
